Our mission

Our leadership team shares a long-standing connection, having known each other for many years and residing in northern Illinois. With a common commitment to supporting children and underprivileged individuals, we aim to provide access to opportunities that have enriched our own lives. Recognizing untapped talent within our community, we observed individuals facing barriers, whether due to socioeconomic challenges or other circumstances, hindering their ability to realize their potential.

Fueled by our deep passion for soccer, our team not only engages in playing, coaching, and training but also shares a collective background as refugees or children of refugees. United by our experiences and aspirations, we founded Umoja Sports Group to extend goodwill within our local community and, ultimately, beyond.

Christian Bitangalo

Executive Director

Hailing originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and spending formative years in the Republic of Burundi, Christian now proudly calls Rockford, Illinois, home. Their soccer journey commenced with two impactful years at Guilford High School, followed by another two years at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Transitioning to the semi-pro level, they represented the Aurora Borealis Soccer Club before finding their current place with Rockford FC. These experiences have not only shaped their love for the game but also instilled in them a deep appreciation for its power to unite communities and transform lives.

Mike Creuzer

Program Director

Mike, the owner of multiple small businesses including audent.io and realms.tv, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the table. With a background as both captain and goalkeeper in club and high school soccer, Mike understands the value of teamwork, determination, and strategy. His passion for the game extends beyond the field, driving him to support initiatives that promote accessibility and opportunity within the soccer community.
